Day 2 WED TEL AVIV
Israel's second largest city - modern vibrant and cosmopolitan - is one of the country's greatest assets, a sun-bronzed strip of coastline where coffee and culinary innovation are the local obsessions, where residents speak every language under the sun, and where life is lived outdoors and to the fullest...
Tel Aviv is a city of world class museums which include Beit Hatfutsot, whose multimedia exhibits illustrate the history of Jewish communities worldwide. The Eretz Israel Museum covers the country’s archaeology, folklore and crafts, and features an on-site excavation of 12th-century-B.C. ruins. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art which houses wonderful collections that range from the 16th century to contemporary art. The impressionist and post-impressionist collections are first-class. And of course, the museum showcases lots of Israeli artists.
Tel Aviv is also home to the world's largest collection of Bauhaus architecture, with just over 4000 examples of the German-born architectural style to be found within the heart of the city centre. In 2003 UNESCO declared Tel Aviv a World Heritage Site because of this unique Bauhaus Design.
Jaffa or Yafo, is the southern and oldest part of Tel Aviv-Yafo, an ancient port city in Israel. Jaffa is famous for its association with the biblical stories of Jonah, Solomon and Saint Peter as well as the mythological story of Andromeda and Perseus.
Peter resided in Jaffa/Joppa for some time in the house of the tanner, by the sea: "And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side". - Acts 10:5
"And we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem. " - 2 Chronicles 2:16
Jaffa is also mentioned in the story of Jonah, the son of Amittai, who was commanded to carry the words of the Lord in the city of Nineveh, (modern day Mosel in Iraq)but refused and tried to escape to Tarshish.
"But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD". - Jonah 13
"The City that Never Stops" as seen from the north with Jaffa in the far distance.
